Senior Project Manager - Forest Ecosystems

Aski Reclamation LP is an indigenous-owned environmental consulting company which integrates First Nations’ knowledge with science, to deliver solutions to our clients and pave the way for industry best practices in Reclamation, Restoration, and Environmental Services.

As a Project Manager specializing in forest ecosystems, you will play a critical role in managing and directing projects aimed at conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forest ecosystems. You will have a key focus on forestry road reclamation projects and landscape level reclamation planning. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of project planning, execution, and evaluation, ensuring adherence to budget, timelines, and quality standards.

  • Reclamation Planning for Caribou Habitat Reclamation
  • Reclamation Planning for Wetlands and Riparian Areas adjacent or within Forest Tenures
  • Restoration for Oil & Gas Projects
  • Restoration for Mining Projects
  • Restoration for Hydroelectric Projects

Expected Wage Range:

$130,000 - $165,000

Consideration given to length and relevance to experience, in addition to qualifications. 

 

Work Environment

The Senior Project Manager - Forest Ecosystems is at times required to visit project work sites. Generally, these worksites will be remote forest tenure areas, but worksites may also include oil and gas, mine, or hydroelectric sites.

It is anticipated that the Senior Project Manager - Forest Ecosystems role will be an office-based position though field visits to project sites will be required. The role has increased workload in the spring and summer months and a decreased workload in the winter.

 

Major Duties

Reclamation and forestry road project management

  • Ensure strategic direction of projects are in alignment with Aski’s organizational objectives
  • Develop multi-year forestry road reclamation project plans, complete with objectives, and strategies for forest ecosystem conservation, restoration, and sustainable management initiatives
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define project scope, deliverables, and milestones
  • Work with General Manager and Saulteau First Nations to prioritize values and objectives from a First Nations perspective
  • Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources
  • Oversee the project through design phase to execution, completion, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Apply an understanding of BC legislation, best management practices, and guidelines for operations and deactivation of forest roads and transportation systems, and for occupying forested lands
  • Apply understanding of BC Permitting required on different land activities
  • Assist the technical team in the application, stakeholder engagement and successful completion of permit applications for reclamation / restoration
  • Apply an understanding of silvicultural and restoration activities and their contribution to forest ecosystem functionality
  • Ensure projects are analyzed by project team to continue to develop best practices and applications with lessons learned applied
  • Work with subject matter experts on best practices, development of project plans and incorporate logistical understanding from equipment operators and field technicians into the project planning
  • Continuous analysis of operations and expenditures to ensure financial efficiencies while meeting project objectives
  • Review and understand all project contract requirements
  • Liaise with public and private sector clients
  • Ensure project reporting is completed according to contract requirements

 

Project management

  • Develop project proposals and budgets
  • Identify and procure necessary resources, estimate project costs, set project scopes and schedules, and prepare project execution plans
  • Conduct project monitoring, management, and evaluation
  • Work with Project Controller to ensure financial health of projects are on target
  • Monitor, track, and control outcomes; facilitate project team meetings along the way to ensure performance measures and milestones are being met
  • Manage project change with stakeholders and project team
  • Oversight of subcontractors
  • Lead project kick off meetings and periodic site visits throughout the project; ensuring all stakeholders are content, specifications are being met, and any client concerns are addressed
  • Delegate and assign project tasks to foresters, project coordinators, or other direct reports accordingly
  • Coordinate activities by setting work schedules, building work assignments, and setting priorities
  • Responsible for review and sign-off on invoices to clients
  • Maintain billable targets as set by General Manager
  • Once a project concludes, assess the project’s overall success, including the performance of those involved; provide quality assurance to clients
  • Ensure our field programs across northeastern British Columbia are properly lead, certifying technical excellence, safety, and quality of deliverables
  • Assume overall responsibility for project health and projects budget/financials
  • Performs project audits in coordination with the finance team to ensure all costs have been allocated prior to project close out

Team management

  • Always demonstrate safe work practices, and recognize that your support for safety helps set a safe work culture and company standard
  • Work with the health and safety employees to develop site orientation material, safe work procedures, and other relevant safety program material
  • Participate and foster participation of community members and integrate indigenous approaches into work plans
  • Work with HR to hire and attract qualified project team candidates as required for projects
  • Ensure that all staff under your direction are equipped with and are using the proper personal protective equipment, comply with company policies and procedures, and ethical standards
  • Coach and mentor project coordinators/administrators, and scientific team members, cultivating a highly functioning team
  • Management of direct reports, providing supervision, guidance, and mentorship
  • Supporting direct reports on their supervision and management of staff reporting to them
  • Develop performance plans to help employees grow and prosper; oversee the quality of work produced
  • Professionally address issues as they arise; including, but not limited to delays in resource procurement, sudden personnel shifts, or interpersonal conflicts

 

 

Education and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field
  • A registered professional in British Columbia, RPF, RFT, RPBio, RBTech, PAg or TAg. would be an asset
  • Proven experience as a project manager, preferably in the field of forest ecosystems or environmental conservation and managing multiple projects
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable forest management practices and legislative policies
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations, policies, and best practices
  • Proficient in project management tools and software
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
  • Analytical mindset, with the ability to think critically and solve problems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Passion for environmental conservation and commitment to sustainable practices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Level 1 First Aid, WHMIS, and H2S
  • BC Driver’s License
