Reclamation Division Manager

Aski Reclamation LP an indigenous-owned environmental consulting company which integrates First Nations’ knowledge with science, to deliver solutions to our clients and pave the way for industry best practices in Restoration, Restoration, and Environmental Services.

The Reclamation Division Manager is a pivotal role within our organization; it is a multifaceted senior leadership role which oversees the management of our Reclamation Services Portfolio, provides executive input into how to strategically grow our Reclamation Services, and applies their technical knowledge and years of experience in the Reclamation sector to large scale project management.

Our existing reclamation services portfolio consists of:

  • Phase 1 & 2 Site Investigations
  • Reclamation Planning (including Caribou Habitat Reclamation)
  • Remediation Planning
  • Reclamation Monitoring & Site Management
  • COR I and COR II Applications
  • Legacy Site Reclamation Planning
  • Contaminated Site Management

 

Reports to:

General Manager

 

Direct Reports:

Project Managers; Project Coordinator; Senior Scientists

 

Work Environment

This role is at times required to visit project work sites including natural remote locations, industrial sites, mines, offices, labs, and a range of assessment locations. A minimum of one week per month is required at the Aski office.  When not in the field and actively supporting project execution, remote/hybrid working options may be considered.

 

Major Duties, divided into subcategories:

Reclamation services portfolio management

  • Maintain a broad overview and scope of concurrent projects relative to our Reclamation Services Portfolio
  • Ensure strategic direction of projects are in alignment with Aski’s organizational objectives
  • Be the subject matter expert regarding the project management of reclamation projects, (project scopes are generally $500,000+ annually)
  • Provide input and advice to GM with regards to opportunities or developments in the sector
  • Support the GM in the develop of long-term project forecasting and project planning
  • Lead business development initiatives such as bids and proposals aimed at growing Aski’s service offer in the reclamation sector
  • Develop and submit RFP’s, tendered bids and/or negotiate open book contracts and/or pricing with prospective clients as per their applicable procurement processes
  • Meet with clients to establish scope and budget of new projects; provide regular updates to the GM regarding these business ventures
  • Ensure project plans encompass scheduling requirements, timeframes, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing activities or projects, assigning duties and responsibilities and scopes of authority, staffing, and recruiting requirements, subcontracting procurement requirements and allotment of available resources to various phases of projects and activities, and coordinating project activities with activities of government regulatory or other agencies
  • Produce an annual work plan and budget for the sector under your purview, incorporating project plans and budgets as approved by clients’ project leadership per contractual requirements
  • Regularly attend senior leadership meetings and provide updates on various corporate reporting functions (prospective work, work-in-hand, division budgets, and resource requirements)
  • Interpret and provide advice on relevant environmental management legislation, with a focus on BC, AB, and Federal regulatory frameworks
  • Collaborate with leadership and senior technical staff to co-develop systems, processes, procedures and standards, and tools reflective of industry standard
  • Assist with environmental audits and inspections, ensuring they are continuously completed to minimize undesirable environmental effects of new or expanded operations
  • Provide sign-off through recognized credentials for projects and regulatory applications
  • Comply with industrial best practices and governing disciplines, codes of ethics and standards

 

Team management

  • Lead your team in terms of professionalism, safety standards and technical quality
  • Providing positive leadership and motivation to all staff, encouraging a team approach, professional attitude and appearance, personal wellness, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills and relationships
  • Participate and foster participation of community members and integrate indigenous approaches into work plans
  • Provide oversight and mentorship to Junior and Intermediate Project Managers
  • Always demonstrate safe work practices, and recognize that your support for safety helps set a safe work culture and company standard
  • Work with the health and safety employees to develop site orientation material, Safe Work Procedures, and other relevant safety program material
  • Enforce safety rules and ensure that all workers have the required knowledge, information, resources, equipment, tools, supplies and vehicles to perform their tasks correctly
  • Implement field health and safety programs at the corporate and projects levels to ensure company safety requirements are met
  • Ensure that safety plans are prepared, reviewed, and submitted for projects and clients
  • Work with hiring panel to hire qualified project team candidates as identified and required in the overall project plan
  • Provide new hire orientation to the company as well as specific to your sector’s projects
  • Ensure staff working on projects have required safety certifications and safety orientations
  • Ensure that all staff under your direction are equipped with and are using the proper personal protective equipment, comply with company policies and procedures, and ethical standards
  • Coach and mentor Intermediate Project Managers, Coordinators/Administrators, and Scientific team members, cultivating a highly functioning team
  • Manage direct reports, providing supervision, guidance, and mentorship
  • Review and approve timesheets, expenses, vacation time, and training requests
  • Develop performance plans to help employees grow and prosper; oversee the quality of work produced
  • Plan and conduct meetings with employees to communicate team targets, goals, and projects
  • Professionally address issues as they arise; including, but not limited to delays in resource procurement, sudden personnel shifts, or interpersonal conflicts

 

Project management

  • Conduct project monitoring, management, and evaluation
  • Monitor, track, and control outcomes; facilitate project team meetings along the way to ensure performance measures and milestones are being met
  • Meet budgetary objectives and adjust project constraints based on financial analysis
  • Regularly update the short-term schedule for the division; ensuring direct reports are effectively scheduled, and ensuring sufficient employee coverage
  • Ensure that each person completes their work in the correct order and on time for the projects to profess efficiently
  • Delegate project staff based on individual strengths, skill sets, and experience levels
  • Direct and coordinate activities of Senior Scientists, Project Coordinators, or other direct reports accordingly to ensure activities and projects progress on schedule and within prescribed budgets
  • Lead project kick off meetings, and lesson learned meetings; and attend periodic site visits throughout the project; ensuring all stakeholders are content, specifications are being met, and any client concerns are addressed
  • Attend field sites to ensure compliance with design, project specifications, regulations, safety codes, and quality assurance
  • Ensure consistent professional client communications and establish communication matrixes
  • Interface with trade professionals, unions, lawyers, and government officials to obtain the necessary permits, approvals and required variances to perform the required activities to complete activities and projects
  • Ensure permit applications are completed in a timely manner and all permit conditions are met
  • Ensure third party contracts are in place as it relates to the project and ensure agreements with multiple parties are adhered to
  • Responsible for review and sign-off on monthly invoices to clients
  • Maintain billable targets as set by General Manager
  • Once a project concludes, assess the project’s overall success, including the performance of those involved; provide quality assurance to clients
  • Ensure our field programs across northeastern British Columbia are properly lead, certifying technical excellence, safety, and quality of deliveries
  • Assume overall responsibility for project health and projects budget/financials
  • Ensure gear and equipment are reserved and maintained, and are billed appropriately for projects managed
  • Performs project audits in coordination with the finance team to ensure all costs have been allocated prior to project close out

 

Education and Skills

  • Sc. in Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Biology, Civil Engineering, or related discipline would be an asset
  • 10 + years’ project management experience, PMP designation would be an asset
  • 5 + years’ experience in Environmental work
  • Knowledge of and experience with environmental standards, and regulations or guidelines and federal and provincial regulations
  • Work experience within the upstream oil and gas industry and/or mine Environmental an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Level 1 First Aid, WHMIS, and H2S
  • Valid Driver’s License
