Position description

The role of Field Technician-Water Quality is an entry level position with some technical aspects.  In this position, you lend overall support to our growing portfolio of aquatic programs and projects; you get to work in the field, gain an understanding of water sampling plans, how to collect samples, and how to analyse them.  With oversight and direction from technical environmental leads and a Senior Project Manager, this is a great opportunity to gain exposure to working in the environmental field.

 

Our ideal candidate for this role is someone who enjoys the outdoors and is interested in working in remote natural settings, likes to participate in field programs, interpret environmental data, compose technical reports, and actively participate in the rapid growth of Aski’s aquatic team.

Work Environment

The Field Technician works in various settings, including natural remote locations, industrial sites, mines, offices, labs, and a range of assessment locations. During this work, the Field Technician may be required to hike, drive all-terrain vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles), collect environmental data from aquatic and terrestrial settings, and perform data collection duties requiring a high level of physical fitness and the capacity to operate safely in remote environments. The ability to complete physically demanding tasks, work for prolonged periods in natural settings and potentially adverse weather conditions, and successfully learn to make good judgment calls is a key requirement for this job.

Major Duties

In the field

  • Observing and inspecting sites. Always ensuring your worksite is safe to perform work.
  • Perform water sample collections as per the advisement of the technical leads and according to the water sampling schedule designed specifically for each site
  • Fill and label bottles for ground water monitoring
  • Understand sampling plans, and implement lessons learned in the field
  • Learn from the technical leads to gain an understanding of operational and compliance monitoring programs, aquatic impact assessments, habitat offsetting, and restoration initiatives
  • Test and analyse water samples and assess quality and clarity
  • Calibrate and maintain instruments used to measure and record water flow from different sources like rivers and lakes
  • Compile, manage, and interpret environmental data, and compose technical reports
  • Ensure that data collected is produced and uploaded timely for compliance.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to safety; remain informed of ERP plans on each site and actively participate in safety and emergency drills; be prepared to respond to emergencies in the field should one occur
  • Arrange for the proper disposal of waste and other hazardous materials
  • Consistently checks with the technical leads and project manager and provide regular updates

 

In the office

  • Doing paperwork and analyzing data for reporting.
  • Safety courses, orientations, and various training.
  • Communicating on the phone and in meetings with internal staff and others as directed.
  • Organizes logistics and project resources timely.
  • Enter timesheets weekly.
  • Attends scheduled meetings.

Education and Skills

A high school diploma with a valid 5th class driver’s license is required to fulfill this role, as is a passion for working outdoors and helping to better the environment.
